An armed man has been arrested in central Sydney after stabbing a woman and being detained on the street by members of the public, authorities say.

King Street is also closed between Clarence Street and York Street.

A statement from NSW Police said: "Inquiries are underway after the body of a woman was found in side a unit on Clarence street, Sydney, about 3.15pm today".

Elsewhere, the body of a woman has been found at a unit on Clarence street.

Sydney CBD is in lockdown after at least one woman was stabbed at a hotel in the heart of the city.

She has been taken to hospital in a stable condition with a stab wound to her back.

The pair and two of their colleagues saw the alleged attacker wielding what Paul said was a knife covered in blood, and chased him, The Guardian reported. "These members of the public have jumped into this situation that was extremely hostile", Wood said."They have brought this person into custody and allowed us to do our job".

"To approach a person... with clear evidence of a stabbing previously, these people are heroes", police spokesman superintendent Gavin Wood said.

Supt Wood said there was no ongoing threat after the man's arrest.
