Five children killed in fire at Pennsylvania day care centre

Five children killed in fire at Pennsylvania day care centre

There was just one smoke detector in a daycare center where five children died in a fire Sunday, the fire chief told multiple media outlets. "Mr and Mrs Luther M Jones".

"So firefighters. started attacking the fire, but another group of firefighters laddered the side of the building and got up into the bedrooms", Mr Santone told local ABC News affiliate Jet24.

A Pennsylvania community is heartbroken after five children were killed in a fire at their daycare.

Four of the five children were staying at the center while their parents worked overnight, news media accounts said.

The victims ranged in age from 8 months to 7 years, officials said.

The fire, reported at about 1:15 am on Sunday, was funneling out of every first-floor window when firefighters arrived, Widomski said.

While she could not speak to safety standards in Pennsylvania, Mattle says when you drop off your kids at any day care in NY, they are in good hands.

The Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, a non-profit, lists the address of the home as the Harris Family Daycare.

The state Department of Human Services Office of Child Development and Early Learning listed the day care as in compliance with requirements following a December 28, 2018, inspection.

Authorities are working to determine a cause for the fire.

A January 3 inspection was said to have revealed the presence of "ashes and cigarette or cigar butts" which are banned in childcare and play spaces, as well as food preparation areas, according to CBS News.

Erie police detectives told the newspaper that the owner, Elaine Harris, was listed in stable condition after being flown to UPMC Mercy.

According to Fire Chief Guy Santone, investigators believe an "electrical overload" could have sparked the fire, because there were multiple electrical cords running under a living room couch, with many things plugged into them. "I will make sure that they are turned closed when not in use".

A neighbor of the day care told Go Erie two children, aged 12 and 17 years old, managed to escape the fire by climbing out onto the first-floor roof and then jumping to the ground.

Both issues were said to have been marked as being corrected after the inspection.
