Xi urges Trump to ease N Korea sanctions

Ortagus said Washington's goal remained the complete elimination of all of North Korea's weapons of mass destruction.

The missile, test-fired by the North Korean military in November 2017, is said to have an estimated striking range of 12,875 km (8,000 miles), giving it the theoretical ability to strike the U.S. from coast to coast.

But there was nothing positive in Wednesday's statement from North Korea's UN Mission, which made no mention of nuclear talks, focusing instead on sanctions.

The Trump administration would support lifting United Nations restrictions on North Korean coal and textiles exports as part of a deal to break their stalemate in nuclear talks, Yonhap reported yesterday, citing an unidentified person close to the White House.

US and South Korean intelligence have yet to confirm whether the Hwasong-15 can be fitted with a nuclear payload, although it is assumed to be capable of carrying a warhead weighing up to 1,000 kg, and possibly equipped with the ability to carry multiple warheads simultaneously.

"An approach that relies on economic isolation and coercion is unlikely to disarm North Korea and will inhibit efforts to shape the regime's transformation and mitigate its destabilizing behavior", the report said. She said the USA special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, would meet his South Korean counterpart during a visit to Europe this week to discuss ways to achieve this.

The two spoke for nearly an hour, and Trump became the first sitting president to enter North Korea when he briefly stepped across a military demarcation line that separates the two Koreas.

It added that not only does this speak "to the reality that the United States is practically more and more hell-bent on the hostile acts against the DPRK, though talking about the DPRK-US dialogue", but the letter was sent by the US Mission "under the instruction of the State Department, on the very same day when President (Donald) Trump proposed for the summit meeting".

Lampard has reunited Chelsea and their fans, says Azpilicueta
We are very happy to have him with us. "We're not going to win anything thinking about the past or complaining". I can't add anything to his career at Chelsea as a player. "We know the fans can make the difference".

Xi and Trump have both held talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently - Xi before the G20 summit during a trip to Pyongyang, and Trump after the summit, when he met Kim at the Demilitarised Zone along the North's border with South Korea.

"As the president has said, sanctions will stay on until the final, fully verified denuclearization" of North Korea, the source said.

The UN Security Council has passed five rounds of sanctions against North Korea since the country's fifth nuclear test in September 2016.

The United States has promised security guarantees before.

A senior USA official said US policy continued to be to maintain sanctions on North Korea until it gives up its nuclear weapons and the State Department reiterated that it expected countries around the world to fully implement and enforce them. Questioned on the veracity of the report, State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said Tuesday that such a move "would never be the end of a process", but "would be at the beginning". But I don't think that the administration has ever characterized a freeze as being the end goal.

Mount said that an overall lack of strategy and Trump's emphasis on spectacle rather than substance has hindered the negotiation process.

"[The Trump administration] has got to shift tactics if they want to make progress", he said. "They can and they should do it now".
