New Accusations Against Jeffrey Epstein, Alex Acosta Resigns

According to the New York Times, the allegation was revealed in a new court filing in which "prosecutors said that Mr. Epstein had paid significant amounts of money to influence individuals who were close to him and who might be witnesses against him at trial".

Isidro "Sid" Garcia, another Palm Beach lawyer who is also representing an Epstein accuser told NPR it wasn't a bad idea for Acosta to go.

The deal has come under increasing scrutiny with the new charges against Epstein this week.

Epstein has pleaded not guilty to one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors. Epstein's conduct has come into sharper focus since he was arrested and charged on Monday with sex trafficking underage girls.

"When the president stands on the White House lawn and said he barely knew Jeffrey Epstein, that's not supported by the fact pattern", O'Brien said Saturday morning. They proposed using Epstein's $77m mansion and private jet as collateral, and pledged to pay for security personnel to enforce his house arrest.

Acosta had also frustrated some conservatives who wanted him gone long before the Epstein uproar. "He made a deal that people were happy with and then 12 years later, they're not happy with it", he said, telling the press, "You'll have to figure all of that out".

Prosecutors wrote they had obtained financial records showing that in November 2018, just two days after The Herald reported on a favorable plea arrangement Epstein received, Epstein wired $100,000 to someone identified as a possible co-conspirator in the case.

Judiciary issues blitz of subpoenas for Kushner, Sessions, Trump associates
Mueller, who was reluctant to testify, has been firm that he will stick to what's already in the report. Jim Jordan, Ohio Republican, said he'll take the hearing in a different direction, prodding Mr.

The payments were made shortly after the Miami Herald began publishing a series of articles about Mr Epstein, who was known for socialising with politicians and royalty.

"This course of action, and in particular its timing, suggests the defendant was attempting to further influence co-conspirators who might provide information against him in light of the recently re-emerging allegations", prosecutors said. A hearing for his new case is scheduled for Monday.

Reporting by the Miami Herald earlier this year and similar charges recently filed against Epstein by federal prosecutors in NY had put Acosta's role in the 2008 deal under renewed scrutiny. "It would be selfish for me to stay in this position and continue talking about a case that is 12 years old rather than the incredible economy we have right now".

"At the end of the day, based on the evidence, professionals within a prosecutor's office decided that a plea that guarantees someone goes to jail, that guarantees he register [as a sex offender] generally and guarantees other outcomes is a good thing, '" Acosta said at the time.

However, Acosta failed to stem the tide of criticism against him and therefore, I suspect, to satisfy President Trump that he would not remain a political liability.

"I do hear that there were a lot of people involved in that decision", the president said.

Trump called Epstein a "terrific guy" in a 2002 magazine feature, but has said this week soon after that time the pair ended their friendship. "It is even said that he likes handsome women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side". "I didn't want anything to do with him", Mr Trump said about this former friend, as Mr Acosta stood at his side.
