Harvey Weinstein recasts his defense team yet again as trial looms

With one lawyer bolting amid public backlash and another saying he and his client just couldn't get along, a judge on Thursday approved a request to recast Harvey Weinstein's defense team yet again, this time a mere 60 days before the disgraced movie mogul is due to stand trial in NY on sexual assault charges.

"It's not #MeToo that railroaded Harvey Weinstein", attorney Donna Rotunno, who joined the case Thursday morning alongside fellow defense attorney Damon Cheronis, told Newsweek.

"I'm not saying that there are not positive things that come from #MeToo, I'm talking about #MeToo in terms of Harvey Weinstein", Rotunno said.

In her own post-hearing press conference, Gloria Allred, who represents two of Weinstein's accusers in their civil cases, scoffed at Rotunno using her gender as a leg up. "I believe women are responsible for the choices that they make".

Lawyer Jose Baez, who's known for representing high-profile clients such as Casey Anthony, asked for permission to leave Weinstein's sexual assault case. In a letter last month to the judge, Baez said Harvey and his relationship had soured and they didn't want to work together anymore.

A lawyer for one of the accusers in Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault case is taking aim at his new counsel's remarks about the #MeToo movement.

Next week in DE, a key hearing in the long-running Weinstein Co. bankruptcy case will determine if the proceeding can be converted from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7.

At a previous hearing in April, Assistant District Attorney for the prosecution Joan Illuzzi indicated that their side of the case should take about three weeks to complete, and Baez indicated that the defense would need about one week in response.

Attorney Donna Rotunno makes comments with other members of Harvey Weinstein's new legal team at New York State Supreme Court in New York, July 11, 2019.

Serena Williams Says She Appreciates 'Great Friend' Meghan Markle's Support at Wimbledon
For Meghan , the outcome of the match was probably not the one she had been hoping for. "She, too, was happy for Simona ". Both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex will be at Wimbledon for the women's singles final on Saturday.

Rotunno says she chose to represent Weinstein and believes the evidence is "very favorable" toward him.

Weinstein has been free on $1 million bail pending trial.

"The emotion of this case has been taken over and common sense has been left outside", Rotunno told reporters after the hearing.

As he walked out of the court today, Harvey ignored requests for interviews with reporters.

As the accusations against Weinstein mounted, his company Weinstein Co fired him and filed for bankruptcy, and he was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Asked outside court if he was off the case, Baez responded, "Yup".

The swap comes after another Weinstein lawyer, Harvard law professor Ronald Sullivan, left in May amid backlash about his involvement.

Weinstein faces charges involving two different women - one who alleges he raped her in 2013, the other that he forced her to perform oral sex in 2006.
