Death toll from Somalia's Kismayu hotel attack rises to 26 - regional president

At least 56 people were injured.

It took security forces 11 hours to bring the overnight siege to an end, with two gunmen being killed and another captured alive, according to a regional president.

Among those killed was a prominent Somali activist, Hodan Nalayeh, and her husband, according to a politician who survived the attack.

"First we targeted [the hotel] with a suicide auto bomb and then armed "mujahideen" [guerrilla fighters] stormed the hotel".

He said the African Union's multinational force in Somalia will continue to work to stabilise the country.

"There are dead bodies and wounded people strewn inside the hotel. They can not claim to be fighting to bring good governance to the country", he said.

Juma's call for the listing of the Somali-based militant group under Resolution 1267 came against the backdrop of a multi-agency operation in search of two Cuban doctors abducted from the Mandera County Referral Hospital on April 12 by al-Shabaab militants, actions the Foreign Office termed as a flagrant violation of worldwide humanitarian law.

The dead included a presidential candidate for August's Jubbaland regional elections, Jubbaland state president Ahmed Mohamed Madobe said.

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says she is sad and shocked to hear about her death.

Jubbaland president Mohamed said Jama Fariid, Naleyah's husband, had also been killed.

Aden Aw Hirsi, Somalia's Minister of Planning and worldwide co-operation, said on Twitter: "We are heartbroken by their sudden violent deaths". "We are restful combating all throughout the hotel", he mentioned.
