China vows to impose sanctions on United States firms supplying Taiwan military

China vows to impose sanctions on United States firms supplying Taiwan military

"To safeguard our national interests, China will impose sanctions on the USA enterprises involved in the above-mentioned arms sales to Taiwan", Geng said.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen left for the United States yesterday on a trip that has angered Beijing, warning that democracy must be defended and the island faced threats from "overseas forces", in a veiled reference to China.

The US State Department has said there had been no change in the US "one China" policy, under which Washington officially recognises Beijing and not Taipei, while assisting Taiwan. He added that the USA should "not to play with fire on the question of Taiwan".

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, despite Chinese opposition, was permitted to make a stopover in NY on Thursday.

Speaking before departure at Taipei's main global airport at Taoyuan, Tsai said she would share the values of freedom and transparency with Taiwan's allies, and was looking forward to finding more worldwide space for Taiwan.

The Caribbean island nations are among the few countries that recognise Taiwan instead of China. "Any obstacles will only strengthen Taiwan's resolution to join the worldwide community". The package includes more than one hundred M1 Abrams tanks, as well as surface-to-air missiles.

In a four-sentence statement, the ministry said that United States arms sales to Taiwan harmed China's sovereignty and national security, but did not provide any details about the sanctions.

Federer tops Nadal, reaches 12th Wimbledon final
Having won his 12th French Open title last month, he had looked fired-up to win his third Wimbledon crown and first since 2010. The second was a complete contrast as Federer lost focus and Nadal, who has won 18 majors, levelled the match in 36 minutes.

The Chinese government has been pushing the U.S. to cancel the planned sale and has even threatened to sanction United States companies involved in the deal.

The US state department declined to comment and the US firms involved in the Taiwan arms deal did not immediately respond.

The Chinese government has never renounced the use of force as an option for achieving reunification.

"We urge the US.to not let Tsai Ing-wen pass through its territory", he said, adding that the US should not provide a platform for "Taiwan independence separatist forces".

The general's comments came as the USA increased the frequency at which it was sending warships through the Taiwan Strait, a particularly sensitive waterway.

"The law [the Taiwan Relations Act] specifically ... requires us to help Taiwan maintain their defence, self-sufficient defence capabilities". There is no official itinerary for her visit or indication of whether she will meet with U.S. officials.
