Barca Confirm Griezmann Signing, Atletico To Open Legal Proceedings

Atletico Madrid said in a news release that the club believes "it is obvious that the agreement between the player and Barcelona was completed before the date of the buyout clause's reduction from €200 to €120m".

Griezmann's contract with Barca will have a buyout clause of €800m, the Spanish champions added in a statement.

"Barcelona has paid the €120 million ($134.9 million) buyout clause to release Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid", Barcelona said on its website.

Atletico Madrid have announced they have already "initiated the procedures" to contest the signing, effectively taking Barcelona to court.

Barcelona finally confirmed the capture of Antoine Griezmann on Friday afternoon and paying €120 million for the Frenchman has taken their transfer spending over €1 billion for the past five years.

Last week Atletico accused Barcelona and Griezmann of a "lack of respect" after Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu revealed the two clubs had held talks about the former Real Sociedad forward.

"The time has come to accept the challenge of a new destination".

Griezmann is Barcelona's fourth signing of this window after the Catalan club signed midfielder Frenkie de Jong from Champions League semi-finalists Ajax, defender Emerson from Atletico Mineiro in Brazil and goalkeeper Neto from Valencia.

"I'll defend the Barca colours with all my determination and commitment. It's our time. This is our path".

The club went on to say that with the move, Griezmann "takes another step forward in his career with the goal of consolidating his place as one of the best players in the world".

Griezmann had been linked to Barcelona in recent transfer windows.
