Android Q Beta 5 Intros Swipe Gesture For Google Assistant Access

Android Q Beta 5 Intros Swipe Gesture For Google Assistant Access

"The Open Beta gives users the opportunity to test, and provide input and feedback, on experimental features not yet released to the general public", Google said in a public announcement. While the OS update introduces a system-wide dark mode among other refinements, the latest beta removes the option of having gesture navigation controls enabled with a third-party launcher.

Google on Wednesday released the fifth beta update for Android Q.

We're getting close to the finish line for Android Q, so Beta 5 (understandably) doesn't have many major changes. It should also allow for a more visually pleasing design.

It seems that Android Q will bring pull-down anywhere to bring the notification bar and quick-action buttons.

Stock markets ease on disappointment at U.S. rate outlook
The greenback briefly rose to a six-week high of 108.90 yen on Tuesday before settling at 108.68 yen, little changed on the day. A man looks at an electronic board showing the Nikkei stock index outside a brokerage in Tokyo.

Basically, if you use a third party launcher in beta 5, you can not use gesture navigation. Specifically, Android Q Beta 5 brings in a new peek behavior for applications that utilize the navigation drawer users can access by swiping inward on the display from the left edge of the screen. It has added a peek behaviour that makes sure that the gesture to open navigation drawers and the gesture to go back do not conflict.

The drawer behavior is changing.

The ability to swipe down in the home screen to see the notification shade has been present in custom ROMs like MIUI, OxygenOS etc. and launcher apps for quite some time, and it's very handy, especially on large smartphones, because reaching the notification shade on the top is just tough.

While it mentions that it will be continuing to work on these issues, with beta 6 users with a custom launcher installed will be switched back to three-button navigation by default until it can work out the problems in a post-launch update.
