Morgan scores five as United States of America open World Cup defence with record victory

Striker Alex Morgan scored five times as holders the United States began their World Cup campaign with a record 13-0 win over Thailand on Tuesday.

Ten of their goals came in the second half as the U.S. set a new mark for the biggest winning margin in a women's World Cup match, bettering Germany's 11-0 defeat of Argentina in 2007.

The result surpassed Germany's 11-0 win over Argentina in 2007 and nearly doubled the US own previous record - a 7-0 success over Taiwan in 1991.

Not only did they fail to qualify for last year's games, the women scored more goals on Tuesday than the men scored in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups combined (12).

The Americans' 13 goals set a new record for the most goals in a single World Cup match.

"We really just came into the game really wanting to showcase ourselves", Morgan said.

"We always want to have any world record and anything we can get over the Germans, we'll take it", USA forward Megan Rapinoe quipped after the game. On Tuesday night, in front of a pro-American crowd of 18,591, the US won 13-0 against Thailand. "Best of luck to these champions for equality, on and off the field", wrote Former President Barack Obama.

Ellis made some lineup moves for the match in the absence of defender Becky Sauerbrunn, who the team said was held out as a precaution with a minor quad injury.

Morgan, U.S. Soccer's 2018 Player of the Year has 106 global goals.

"She's a quality player and to stay encouraged through this tournament, because she's living out a dream that most girls and women don't get to".

Morgan opened the goal spree for the title favorites, who are in pursuit of a fourth world crown, with a header in the 12th minute and from then on there was no stopping the champions. Playing in her third World Cup, she was named player of the match.

It came close to the team's biggest rout ever.

The last time they played, it got ugly.

It may not have been a ideal match as several of the players were still finding their groove on the worldwide stage, but the win gave the US some comfort and confidence heading into their next game against Chile on Sunday.
