Feds say photos of travelers compromised in data breach

The cybersecurity of US government agencies remains questionable as yet another attack was carried out against a subcontractor under the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), resulting in the loss of traveler and license plate photos stored in the company's database, according to a Monday statement from the agency. "No CBP systems were compromised", the agency said in a statement on Monday.

It said the subcontractor had transferred copies of the images to its company network in violation of government policies and without the agency's authorization.

The breach first came to light on May 31.

It also isn't clear why the unnamed subcontractor was storing the data, but the CBP only learned of it late last month."Initial information indicates that the subcontractor violated mandatory security and privacy protocols outlined in their contract", the agency added.

In a statement, a CBP spokesperson said none of the leaked images have turned up yet on the Dark Web or internet.

Civil liberties activists decried the reported CBP breach.

The CBP's revelation comes a week after Perceptics, a company that makes license plate readers used by the United States government, was reportedly hacked.

U.S. law enforcement agencies argue that facial recognition systems enhance border security and help to catch criminals.

Perceptics and other companies offer automated license-plate-reading devices that federal officials can use to track a vehicle, or its owner, as it travels on public roads. Police agencies have also used the data to look for potential criminal suspects.

The data included images of drivers in their cars and license plates taken over a six-week period at an undisclosed border crossing, the newspaper said. "You want technology that generates data you can trust and delivers it when and where you need it most", a marketing website says.

Recorded license plates are checked in real time against DHS databases to which 13 federal agencies have access.

Images of tens of thousands of travelers crossing the United States' border have been stolen from an immigration subcontractor in a data breach, U.S. media reported on Monday.

"Government use of biometric and personal identifiable information can be valuable tools only if utilized properly".
