Donald Trump Jr. glad Senate testimony 'is finally over'

Trump Jr. said "I am glad this is finally over, we're able to put some final clarity on that, and I think the committee understands that".

Donald Trump Jr. returned to the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee for a second closed-door interview Wednesday about matters related to several investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, including that of former special counsel Robert Mueller.

This time, the panel, which is known for its bipartisanship, wants to revisit some of Trump Jr's earlier statements, including about a proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow, according to U.S. media.

Trump Jr.'s testimony comes as the intelligence panel continues its two-year investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Panel chairman Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) has indicated a reluctance to pursue any perjury charges against Trump Jr., reasoning that if Mueller had had access to the Senate Intelligence Committee's interview transcripts, and if he had found cause to indict him for the crime of lying to Congress, he would have. Senators reportedly wanted to review aspects of Trump Jr.'s testimony in light of revelations made by Cohen during his public hearing and information in Mueller's report.

Trump Jr, who helms the Trump Organization collection of businesses that his real estate billionaire father ran for decades, earlier told reporters there was "nothing to correct" from his previous comments to the committee.

On Wednesday, Trump Jr said he provided "clarification" to the intelligence panel, and pointed out that Cohen himself is now serving a prison sentence for campaign finance violations and lying to Congress.

The report did not find any clear evidence to charge members of Trump's campaign with conspiring with Russian Federation, but neither did it exonerate the president of obstruction of justice.

Some Democrats suspect he may have lied about what he and his father knew about a June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer offering dirt on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, as well as other connections between the two sides. Some Republicans are becoming restless with the topic, and Burr received considerable blowback from colleagues over the subpoena.

Don Jr., the eldest son of President Donald Trump, reached a deal with the committee last month, capping off a lengthy and contentious feud between Republicans in the upper chamber that spilled out into the public few after the committee subpoenaed Don Jr. "But it seems very unfair to me", the president said. Ted Cruz, said there was "no need" for the subpoena.
