Cyclone Vayu: 10 Chinese ships seek shelter in Ratnagiri

Cyclonic storm "Vayu" has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, forcing authorities to put Gujarat on high alert. "It is being closely monitored by IMD and might make landfall in Gujarat, but even if it does not, it is close enough to the landmass that the impact of cyclone will be felt along the Western coast", said Dr K Sathi Devi, a scientist at the IMD.

According to the IMD, the cyclone is likely to move almost northwards and cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Veraval & Diu region as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph during early morning of June 13, 2019. The IMD has issued a warning for Saurashtra and Kutch region in Gujarat which would receive a widespread rainfall and heavy to very heavy showers in isolated areas on June 13. If needed, we will also take the help of the Air Force. It will slightly intensify and lay centred over East Central Arabian Sea about 630 km almost south of Veraval (Gujarat). "We have ordered schools, colleges and anganwadis in the districts which are likely to be hit by the cyclone to remain shut on June 12 and 13", Mr. Kumar said. To be disaster ready, aircraft AC-17 will carry about 160 personnel of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Vijaywada to Gujarat to carry out Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) missions, news agency ANI reported.

Gujarat is at presently reeling under severe heat wave as the maximum temperatures in major cities, including Ahmedabad, hovering over 43 degrees Celsius since the last week of May. Ports are also directed to flag a danger signal. An advancement of the storm is likely to stall monsoon further in northern parts of India.

The monsoon usually sets over the State around June 15. But as it got late to arrive in Kerala this year, it is expected to be delayed by a week in Gujarat.
