Canada to ban single-use plastics from 2021

Less than 10% of plastic used in Canada gets recycled, and without any change in habits, Canadians will be throwing out $11 billion worth of plastic products by 2030.

Canada will ban single-use plastics from 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday, declaring it a "global challenge" to phase out the bottles, straws and plastic bags clogging the world's oceans.

"A real solution needs to be nationwide - we need to cover all of Canada with this decision - and that's why the federal government is moving forward on a science-based approach to establishing which harmful single-use plastics we will be eliminating as of 2021", he said.

It said the government has dedicated more than C$10 million (US$7.5 million) to support made-in-Canada innovations to tackle plastics pollution.

The government said that 1 million birds and over 100,000 sea mammals worldwide are injured or die each year when they mistake plastic for food or become entangled.

"You've all heard the stories and seen the photos, and to be honest, as a dad, it's tough trying to explain this to my kids", Trudeau said.

The government is also in the final stages of passing two bills they argue will tighten environmental assessment criteria for energy projects and also protect the sensitive coast of northern British Columbia from oil spills by banning tanker traffic.

The prime minister also mentioned holding companies responsible for the packaging waste they create. "We've reached a defining moment, and this is a problem we simply can't afford to ignore", read the government's announcement.

According to federal figures, about one-third of plastics used in Canada are for one-time or short-lived products and packaging, which includes up to 15 billion plastic bags used every year and close to 57 million straws used daily.

Canada has not yet decided exactly which single-use plastics they will ban. A high-profile campaign against plastic straws previous year drove numerous multi-national food and beverage companies - including A&W and Starbucks - to replace plastic straws with paper versions, and many restaurants just stopped automatically putting straws in drinks as a first step.

In May, the United Kingdom followed suit with a plastic ban by 2020.

Last year, Canada used its turn as president of the Group of Seven nations to put finding ways to deal with ocean pollution near the top of its agenda.

To be sure, data are spotty about how much plastic winds up in single-use items versus durable goods such as cars. The US and Japan to the Covenant not joined. A study past year determined that just 9% of all the plastic that has ever been produced has been recycled.

The plan also gives time for businesses, like fast food restaurants, to adjust and find alternatives to plastic.

Recycling, he said, would not only cut down on pollution but would help produce 42,000 jobs in the recycling and recovery businesses.
