Boris Johnson surges ahead in Conservative leadership election

Boris Johnson surges ahead in Conservative leadership election

One of seven contenders to replace British Prime Minister Theresa May quit the Conservative Party leadership race on Friday, as front-runner Boris Johnson was accused by rivals of trying to dodge media scrutiny.

In the ballot of Conservative MPs, former London mayor Johnson secured more than twice the number of votes won by his nearest challengers as three of the 10 candidates were eliminated from the race.

It is thought Mr Hancock is considering pulling out of the race to support another candidate with a better chance of winning the 33 votes needed to get past the next round.

Bookies now price Johnson at 1/5 to win the leadership race after he scooped 114 votes out of a potential 313, with Jeremy Hunt (43 votes), Michael Gove (37 votes) and Dominic Raab (27 votes) a long way behind.

By obtaining more than a third of the total MPs, Johnson is now nearly certain to be one of the two candidates to go to the 160,000 party members for the run-off ballot. The victor will be announced on July 22.

May's failure to deliver a Brexit deal was the reason for her exit as leader of the Conservative Party.

He also bowed to growing political pressure and agreed to debate the other Conservative Party contenders to replace outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May on BBC television Tuesday evening.

Andrea Leadsom, Mark Harper and Esther McVey all failed to get enough votes to continue.

All the remaining candidates, apart from Johnson, say they will take part in TV debates on Sunday and Tuesday.

The admission has maimed Gove and left the way open for Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt to lay claim to being the only candidate who can seriously challenge Johnson.

McVey was pursuing a no-deal Brexit, arguing that the agreement May struck with Brussels keeps Britain too closely tied to the EU.

"I've always said that, in extremis, if it was the only way we could deliver Brexit then I would very reluctantly do a no-deal Brexit but I don't think we're at that point yet".

It will take several weeks to conclude the ballots after a series of votes whittles down the hopefuls to just two contenders.

Raab, like Johnson, has warned that he was ready to take Britain out of the European Union without an agreement when the new Brexit deadline arrives in October, if the European Union does not offer better terms.

"This serious moment calls for a serious leader", he tweeted.

The head of the Fire Brigades Union tells James O'Brien that firefighters will never back Boris Johnson for Prime Minister.

The victor of the leadership race is set to become the UK's next Prime Minister after Theresa May announced her resignation on the 24th May.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, placed sixth, thanked his supporters, saying it was "terrific to have more votes from colleagues than I could have hoped for".
