Russian Federation tells Pompeo: Enough mistrust, let's reboot our ties

"Most of all we must make sure we don't end up putting Iran back on the path to re-nuclearisation, because if Iran becomes a nuclear power its neighbours are likely to want to become nuclear powers", Hunt said. "But we've also made clear to the Iranians that if American interests are attacked, we will most certainly respond in an appropriate fashion". "These missiles could easily kill a Russian or an American", Pompeo said.

And in response to media reports that he was about to send 120,000 troops to the Middle East in the event of hostilities, U.S. President Donald Trump described it as "fake news" before adding, "If we did that, we'd send a hell of a lot more troops than that".

"Negotiating with the present American government is doubly poisonous... they are not decent humans, they don't stand by anything", he said referring to the USA decision to withdraw from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major world powers. "These are things we can build upon".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Russian leader Vladimir Putin have reached an agreement on Syria.

"We have many differences here but the fact we will continue to discuss the situation that gives us hope that certain agreements could be reached with the support of the United States and Russia", Lavrov said, according to CBS News.

Since then it has slapped sweeping sanctions on Iran in an all-out effort to reduce Tehran's regional clout.

"It's clear that such insinuations are absolute fiction", he said after the talks with his United States counterpart.

After several hours of talks between Pompeo and Lavrov - and another 90 minutes between Pompeo and Putin - Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yury Ushakov praised Pompeo for holding a "not bad, concrete conversation".

"I urged Russian Federation to reach out to Ukraine's new president [Volodymyr Zelensky] to demonstrate leadership by taking step towards breaking the stalemate", he said.

Trump said Monday that he expects to meet with the presidents of both Russian Federation and China on the sidelines of the G20 meeting.

The exchange follows the publication of the Mueller report, which found that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 U.S. election but did not conclude that the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow. Pompeo arrived in Russian Federation for talks that are expected to focus on an array of issues including arms control and Iran.

"Despite the exotic nature of Mr Mueller's commission, on the whole he conducted quite an objective investigation and confirmed the absence of any collusion between the U.S. administration and Russia", Putin said.

Lavrov mockingly said that the United States had also promoted democracy in war-torn Iraq and Libya and called for dialogue with Maduro - an option rejected by Washington.
