Greenpeace activists arrested over Sydney Harbour Bridge protest

Thirteen people have been arrested after environmental group Greenpeace called on Prime Minister Scott Morrison to "declare a climate emergency" by protesting on the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Tuesday morning.

Police have now confirmed that the remaining three who were suspended from ropes beneath the bridge, have been removed and arrested.

The protesters unfurled banners demanding action on climate change as they abseiled from underneath the pedestrian walkway on the western side of the bridge.

A number of protesters abseiled from the bridge, carrying signs with various slogans including "100% renewables" and " Make coal history". "I call on you to declare a climate emergency now".

Live Traffic Sydney said one lane of the Sydney Harbour Bridge was closed about 6.30am due to a "police operation".

"Australia is facing a climate emergency right now", Greenpeace Australia Pacific CEO David Ritter said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The protestors are joined on the ground by Australians from across the country who have had their lives turned upside down by the impacts of climate change". Our political leaders must listen to those already affected by climate disaster and act.

Climate change has been a contentious topic for Morrison's conservative coalition government ahead of an election on Saturday, with opinion polls showing the coalition is trailing the center-left Labor opposition.

"Coal is the number one driver of climate change in Australia - we urgently need a plan to phase out coal power to be replaced by clean energy", he said.
