Trump Makes New Announcement On Republican Health Care Plan

The plan will mandate health insurance companies cover Americans with pre-existing conditions, the most popular Obamacare component. Multiple Republican senators who Trump name-checked said they were not a part of a working group, but had spoken with the President about health care recently. And while Republicans gained Senate seats last fall, there's no indication that GOP senators want another fight over repealing "Obamacare", particularly not those up for re-election next year.

Republicans were cool after Trump surprised them last week with an unexpected pivot to the issue and his claims the GOP will be the party of health care.

Trump's tweets dialed back expectations that Republicans would be able to pass major health care legislation before the 2020 election, but his promise of a vote that would hinge on a Republican takeback of the House ensures nonetheless that health care will figure prominently in 2020.

On Capitol Hill, Republicans were relieved.

Several top Democrats in the House and Senate have repeatedly accused Republicans of having no tangible Obamacare alternative, and the GOP is now attempting to pin the problem on Democrats heading into 2020.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump will "hold Americans hostage through 2020" on an issue that affects millions of people. "What's out there right now is untenable", Perdue said, rejecting how the Affordable Care Act currently protects people with pre-existing conditions.

The Fraternal Order of Police in Chicago plans a protest outside Foxx's office Monday over the dismissal of the Smollett charges. January 29 when two men wearing masks attacked him, shouted racial and homophobic slurs and placed a noose around his neck.

In his tweets, Trump claimed that a bill is in the works. "The Republican plan is manifold", Conway insisted Sunday, echoing both Sanders and Trump's later comments. A Quinnipiac University poll last week found 55% of Americans supporting the improvement and not the replacement of the nation's health care system.

Still, Trump last week appeared to commit his party to a new push for a plan to replace the health law.

In remarks to reporters Tuesday, Trump said, "I wanted to put it after the election because we don't have the House".

He said Republicans "are going to work together to come up with something that's really spectacular".

Trump unsettled Republican lawmakers last week by putting the spotlight back on the thorny issue of repealing and replacing Obamacare, vowing that his party would turn to replacing the health care law as his administration backed a federal court ruling striking down the law in its entirety.

Republicans are developing "a really great HealthCare Plan with far lower premiums (cost) & deductibles than Obamacare", Trump said, referring to the Affordable Care Act signed into law by Obama. Yet the case, now at the appellate court stage, is still likely to be appealed to the Supreme Court.
