South Korea Stutters Towards a National 5G Launch on Friday

"The government and private companies came together to achieve the world's first commercialised 5G services and this proves once again our country is undoubtedly the top powerhouse in information and communications", said You Young-min, South Korean minister for science and information technology.

The US has pressed its allies and major economies to avoid 5G solutions from Chinese-owned telecom giant Huawei, citing security risks that technological backdoors could give Beijing access to 5G-connected utilities and other components.

South Korea's telecommunications carriers turned on super-fast 5G mobile internet networks abruptly ahead of schedule in an attempt to ensure the country becomes the first in the world to launch the services.

Huawei, the global leader, has registered 1,529 5G patents, according to data analysis firm IPlytics.

Park Jung-ho, CEO of SK Telecom, talks up the operator's 5G offering on Wednesday at what SKT called the "beginning of the Age of Hyper-Innovation with 5G" at the company's 5G Launching Showcase.

With that said, the special 5G edition of Galaxy S10 has now been made available for purchase in South Korea and unfortunately, we don't know the exact date for when the smartphone is going to arrive in the US, Europe or Asia.

South Korea comes next, with its companies holding 2,051 patents.

And 5G speeds should soon be used in the real world after Samsung in February this year revealed the arrival of a 5G model of its flagship Galaxy S10 handset, along with the Galaxy Fold folding smartphone-tablet hybrid. Verizon last month stated that customers would be able to use 5G facilities on Moto Mod and Z3 by Motorola.

"Verizon customers will be the first in the world to have the power of 5G in their hands", said Hans Vestberg, Verizon's chairman and chief executive officer. That is many times faster than existing 4G speeds, which tend to be around 20 Mbps.

Andre Fuetsch, president of AT&T Labs, said in a statement Wednesday that independent testing shows "that we are the fastest wireless network nationwide".

Verizon's network will work with Lenovo's Moto Z3 smartphone fitted with a special accessory, while rival United States carrier AT&T launched a 5G-based system in parts of 12 cities in December - although it is only accessible to invited users through a free hotspot device, rather than paying customers with mobiles.

World estimates predict that 5G service will generate incomes by 2035 $3.5 billion Dollars and 22 million jobs worldwide. It has a total of 27 million users. Among South Korea's top three telecom operators, SK Telecom and KT Corp do not use Huawei equipment for 5G.

"If 5G is fully implemented", he said, "it will greatly improve people's lives".
