Singapore's Changi Airport opens new complex to lure travelers

No, not Bali or Barbados - this marvellous scene greets visitors to the tenth floor of Singapore Airport's newest addition, the magnificent lifestyle complex of Jewel Changi. It offers both local residents and global visitors a multi-faceted experience that includes attractions, unique shopping and dining concepts, as well as airport and accommodation facilities.

It's not the first airport splashing cash - a trip to Vancouver International Airport yields a 114,000-litre aquarium, while Dubai Airport boasts a swimming pool complete with sauna and jacuzzi - but Jewel Changi has set a new benchmark for transient opulence.

The 135,700 sqm complex, designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie, features a distinctive dome-shaped façade and firmly cements the facility's position as the World's Leading Airport.

In conjunction with the development of Jewel, Changi Airport's Terminal 1 has also been expanded to increase capacity by another 3 million passenger movements per year.

Mitch Marner scored twice, including the game victor , as Toronto beat the Bruins 4-1 on Thursday. Nazem Kadri sent Nylander off on a breakaway to make it 3-1 with 95 seconds left in the period.

Sharon Ng, who teaches marketing at Nanyang Technological University's business school, said the concept was unique as other airports mainly target travellers and don't have the scale of retail that Jewel does. It is the world's tallest indoor waterfall at 40 metres high, and come nightfall, the sheet of water becomes a screen on which a light-and-sound show is projected.

"Attracting transit passengers is not realistic as they would need to clear immigration and there are so many great facilities [inside the airport] already that makes Changi a top transit airport", he said.
