Pelosi says Barr comments undermine his role

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has questioned Attorney General William Barr's independence from President Donald Trump, arguing Barr's pursuit of Trump's claims about "spying" during the 2016 campaign undermines his position as the nation's top law enforcement officer.

Barr was testifying for a second day at congressional budget hearings that were dominated by questions about special counsel Robert Mueller's Trump-Russia investigation.

In testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee on April 10, Barr said he thought USA intelligence agencies conducted "spying" operations against Trump's 2016 election campaign team.

His review is separate from a Justice Department inspector general investigation into the early days of the FBI's Russian Federation probe, which Barr said he expects to conclude sometime around May or June. "I was amazed at that and rather disappointed that the attorney general would say such a thing.

I think spying did occur", Mr. Barr told Senator Jeanine Shaheen, Democrat from New Hampshire, on Wednesday.

"What I'm most interested in is getting started, hopefully the attorney general, he mentioned it yesterday".

Following the release of his four page summary of the Mueller report late last month, Barr promised to make a redacted version of the 400 page report available to Congress in April.

"Once we get those comments, we'll be able to work with you on any concerns about (the bill)", he said in response to questions asked by Sen. "The question was whether it was adequately predicated". He later said he is not sure there had been improper surveillance but will make sure proper procedures were followed. "AG Barr must retract his statement immediately or produce specific evidence to back it up".

American Airlines extends Boeing 737 MAX cancellations through August 19
On Thursday, Southwest airlines announced the decision to extend its cancellation of Boeing 737 Max aircraft through August 5. Investigators are focusing on the plane's anti-stall software, the Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS).

"You'll recall that the special counsel did spin off a number of cases that are still being pursued", Barr told lawmakers.

Daily Centrist editor-in-chief Rick Ungar said he was confused by Barr's spying claim.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday morning, the Republican president railed against the Department of Justice inquiry into whether the Trump campaign had conspired with the Kremlin to sway the 2016 election.

Donald Trump, the President of the US, stated that the investigation of Russia's interference in the USA elections was a coup attempt, as The Washington Post reported.

He is likely to be asked to further explain himself at a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing Wednesday, though it's unclear how much more he will say.

"I'm landing the plane right now", Barr said at a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing.

Mr. Trump's allies have long argued that Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department officials should have disclosed to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that Mr. Steele's dossier was indirectly funded by the Democratic party and Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic nominee for President, through a law firm named Perkins Coie.
