Mitch Marner faked out Tuukka Rask so badly on this goal

Mitch Marner faked out Tuukka Rask so badly on this goal

David Backes was a healthy scratch for the first time in his playoff career Thursday night in the Boston Bruins' 4-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at TD Garden.

He also was studying the Maple Leafs while he was watching from the ninth floor. Boston is the third best team in Power Play situations this season.

"He's one of our special players", said Toronto defenceman Jake Muzzin, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Los Angeles Kings. "He's nearly one step ahead, to be honest". "The team that (loses) always digs in and as the team that won, we have to do the same or we'll be left behind".

"We just wanted to stay above them", Marner said.

Frederik Andersen settled the puck behind his net, patiently faked out the hard-charging Brad Marchand and zipped a pass beyond Patrice Bergeron to clear the defensive zone. "Muzzy and (defence partner Nikita) Zaitsev did a great job as well".

Mitch Marner scored twice, including the game victor, as Toronto beat the Bruins 4-1 on Thursday. Tavares assisted on Marner's first goal.

Andersen, who had an.896 save percentage in last year's playoff defeat to the Bruins, will likely be under siege early in Saturday's Game 2 against a desperate opponent that knows losing a pair of contests at home to start a series is often a death sentence.

Hours before the game, Leafs coach Mike Babcock compared finding success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to disarming a bomb. "We really kept our composure". And with Jake Debrusk's status for Game 2 still up in the air after the 27-goal scorer suffered an undisclosed injury in Game 1, the burden gets even heavier for Boston's top line.

NOTES: The Leafs have only been awarded four postseason penalty shots, and the only other time they have scored was Sundin against Buffalo on May 29, 1999. "Last second I switched it up just seeing where he was and seeing his position".

The burly West Indian was dismissed in the second ball of the last over with four needed for victory from final five balls. As per reports, the injury looked like a hamstring injury, which takes at least four to six weeks to recover.

Nazem Kadri sent Nylander off on a breakaway to make it 3-1 with 95 seconds left in the period.

Indications that the Leafs have returned better equipped this spring, however, weren't at all exclusive to Marner, who had already extended his postseason points streak to seven games before stepping up to the circle with the game-tying goal in the first period. Marchand has recorded six goals and 10 assists over the last 10 games for Boston.

Muzzin's initial point shot was tipped by Marner in the slot before bouncing to the Leafs' forward, who slapped a shot that found iron a second time and dribbled in at 16:44.

When Boston beat Toronto in seven games a year ago, it didn't see this Mitch Marner. A warning sign like a first period playing out almost identically to the Game 1 that went south last spring determined that the Leafs needed something to reverse course.

The Toronto Maple Leafs look for another road victory to take a 2-0 series lead back home.

There would be no such comeback on this night.

"There are a lot of things that we can do better that we didn't do [Thursday]", said Bergeron. "We're going to need to keep going here throughout the series".

While it's unknown if Backes will sit for a second straight game, if he does get the nod, fans can be certain he'll be more than ready to go.

And there's little doubt Marner will meet that challenge head-on.
