Man arrested after boy (5) falls from balcony in shopping mall

Police say he refused to give his name and resisted arrest.

Aranda was given a trespass notice then to stay away from the mall. The charges state he threw a drinking glass at a customer at Twin City Grill in the Mall of America.

A 5-year-old boy plummeted three floors Friday after being pushed or thrown from a balcony at the Mall of America, according to witnesses, and a 24-year-old man with a history of causing disturbances at the mall was in custody.

Police do not think there is any relationship between the man and the child or the child's family.

The suspect was chased down inside the mall and was taken into custody.

Police said Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, of Minneapolis, was being held on suspicion of attempted homicide.

The child suffered life-threatening injuries and is being treated at a hospital. The child landed on the first floor on Friday morning.

"She was screaming 'Everyone pray, everyone pray. It was horrific", she said. "I saw the boy go motionless".

Potts did not say whether the child and his family are from Minnesota or visiting. A witness said the boy's mother sobbed and screamed, "Somebody hurt my baby!" "Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with that child and his family in hopes that that child is able to recover".

"Our officers initially responded and performed first aid on the child along with some other witnesses and passersby", Potts said.

Investigators are working with mall officials to determine if there was video, Potts said. But service was restored just before 11:30 a.m.

Though the identity of the five-year-old boy, as well as the mother who was with him at the time, have not yet been identified, a witness spoke to The Star Tribune about the incident.

"We have counseling services available for anyone who may need assistance", the statement continued. We know that this is a concerning event for all of us. "That suspect has been taken into custody, is now at the Bloomington Police Department".
