Hundreds of cases of drug-resistant superbug reported in NYC

Hundreds of cases of drug-resistant superbug reported in NYC

A unsafe, emerging fungus that is resistant to antifungal drugs is becoming an increasing health concern around the world.

Simply put, fungi, just like bacteria, are evolving defenses to survive modern medicines.

In a recent feature on the spread of the fungus, the New York Times reported that some of the symptoms of C. auris include fever and chills.

While most Candida auris infections are treatable with antifungal medications, the CDC says it's concerned that some have proven to be resistant to all three main classes of antifungal medications.

What makes the infection even more alarming is that the fungus persists on surfaces and has been documented spreading from person to person within hospitals and clinics.

Hospitals are found to be particularly vulnerable to this new drug-resistant fungus.

Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus, which can cause death and serious illnesses in people with weakened immune systems, is spreading across the world - including in some of America's major cities. The yeast, according to that alert, was first discovered in 2009 from the ear discharge of a patient in Japan, though a retrospective study of old medical samples found one infection dating back to 1996 in South Korea.

While some shouted phrases of support, such as "I love you, Lori!" others jeered, yelling "Lori, pay my tuition!" She smiled as she walked out of the courthouse on Wednesday and climbed into a black SUV with her lawyers.

The CDC reported the first seven cases of candida auris in the United States in August 2016.

As of February 28, there were 587 confirmed cases across the country, majority in New York State, where there were 309 cases.

After the woman's wound had gotten infected, multiple organisms - including Candida auris, started to grow.

Dr Chia said that while such fungal infections are hard to detect, Singapore has strategies in place to manage such hospital-acquired infections. The first involved a 24-year-old Bangladeshi male who flew to Singapore to seek medical treatment, while the second involved a 69-year-old U.S. male citizen who was suffering from a lung disease. "In some outbreaks, reported mortality has approached 60 percent".

Now hospitals and local governments are reluctant to disclose outbreaks for fear of being seen as infection hubs. IL had 144 confirmed cases and New Jersey had 104.

According to the New York Times, in 2015, there was an outbreak at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, which resulted in 72 total cases of C. auris. "As special precautions are needed to prevent the spread of this pathogen, prompt identification is essential".

Jeniel Nett, MD, PhD, and Assistant Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Medical Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, tells Salon Candida auris has emerged as a public health threat for many reasons.
