Google’s Wing Drones To Begin Deliveries In Australia

Australia is getting a taste of commercial drone delivery service by Google's parent company, Alphabet.

Project Wing (sometimes referred to as just Wing) has previously tested direct-to-consumer drone delivery at places like Virginia Tech in 2016, but this is the first time that the company has won government approval for relatively large-scale deliveries anywhere in the world.

To get the products, users will be required to order stuff via Wing's app and the order will be delivered to users' doorsteps via drones.

"We have approved Wing Aviation Pty Ltd to operate ongoing delivery drone operations in North Canberra", the Civil Aviation Safety Authority said on Tuesday.

A Project Wing drone set to make a delivery. Assuming everything goes according to plan, it will expand to the suburbs of Harrison and Gungahlin in the following months.

It comes after an 18-month trial of using drones to deliver food, drinks and medication in the Canberra suburb of Bonython was deemed successful.

Chicago sues actor Jussie Smollett for police costs
Under the city code, Chicago could triple the amount the city originally demanded that Smollett pay to more than $390,000. A spokesperson for Smollett declined to comment at the time this story was filed.

The drones are banned from crossing over major roads and there's a minimum distance they have to maintain from people on the ground.

The agency decided previous year that large-scale commercial package delivery operations by drones would need to meet the same safety and economic certification standards as other licensed USA airlines. The drones will only be allowed to fly during the day and not before 08:00 AEST at the weekend.

Over the following years Project Wing was developed by engineers at Google X, the secret "moonshot" labs at the research giant.

It remains to be seen how local residents will react to the drones flying over their neighbourhoods.

Furthermore, it is suggested that Wing will continue to work with local policymakers, regulators and more to further enhance the service.

The new delivery service will start to be operational in a few weeks and will start operating in a few neighbourhoods in Canberra first before expanding to the entire city.
