Former Ecuadorian President Blasts Successor For Lifting Assange's Asylum: 'The Greatest Traitor'

Former Ecuadorian President Blasts Successor For Lifting Assange's Asylum: 'The Greatest Traitor'

The Committee to Protect Journalists has expressed deep concerneds by the U.S. prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Assange is in British jail and faces extradition to the United States on charges he conspired to reveal government secrets and hack into Pentagon computers.

What the government and its cheerleaders are really asking here is for us to suspend fundamental principles and practices underlying free speech and a free press.

The US confirmed it would seek the extradition of Assange from the United Kingdom, prompting immediate concerns over journalistic protections under the first amendment.

He had been living in the embassy, fearing arrest, but the Ecuadoran government says that Assange "repeatedly violated" the conditions of his protection. Rather, it simply accuses Assange of trying to help Manning log into the Defense Department's computers using a different user name so that she could maintain her anonymity while downloading documents in the public interest and then furnish them to WikiLeaks to publish.

Swedish prosecutors opened an investigation into Assange after two women accused him of sexual offenses during a 2010 visit to Sweden.

The Ecuadorian government blamed WikiLeaks for the leaked documents, dubbed the INA Papers, an allegation that WikiLeaks denies.

Bouman worked with three other colleagues to developed the algorithm that made it possible for the image to come together. To verify what they had produced, the teams "tried to excise humans from the equation altogether", Bouman said.

Relations between Assange and Ecuador deteriorated further on Wednesday when WikiLeaks called a press conference and claimed the group had discovered a spying operation against Assange from within the embassy. "The bottom line is that he has to answer for what he has done, at least as it has been charged", she said.

When asked on Thursday if he "still loves WikiLeaks", Trump did his best to back off the notion, saying, "I know nothing about WikiLeaks, it's not my thing".

Foreign Minister José Valencia and Interior Minister María Paula Romo accused Assange of riding scooters around the cramped embassy hallways, insulting staff and smearing feces on the walls.

Swedish prosecutors dropped a rape investigation into Assange in 2017 because they were unable to formally notify him of the allegations - a necessary step in proceeding with the case - while he remained in the Ecuadorian embassy.

Correa told CNN Thursday that the decision by his successor to revoke Assange's asylum status was "the biggest betrayal perhaps in Latin American history".

The indictment does not explicitly charge Assange for publication, a move that would have wide-ranging press freedom implications, but it does construe his interactions with Manning as part of a criminal conspiracy. British police said Assange had been arrested Thursday for breaching his bail conditions and in relation to the USA arrest request.

Zakharova is the latest Russian Federation official to comment on Assange's detention.
