Fordham student critically injured in fall from clock tower

A USA university student has died after she fell more than 12 metres from a campus bell tower in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Monfries was reportedly trying to get photos of the city from the top of the tower and sent a Snapchat video before her deadly fall.

"It's like a senior thing to go on the most popular building on campus", said Priscilla Morales, a psychology student at the university, The New York Times reported. Students say sneaking into the university's most recognizable building at night has always been a tradition for Fordham seniors.

Twenty-two-year-old Sydney Monfries died Sunday after she and friends were climbing up the Keating Clock tower when she slipped and fell through an opening in one of the stairway landings.

Sydney Paige Monfries, 22, from Portland, Oregon, suffered fatal injuries following the horror plunge at Fordham University campus in NY, weeks before graduation.

President McShane said the school would award Monfries's bachelor's degree posthumously.

At 6:49 p.m., Joseph M. McShane, S.J., announced to the Fordham community that Monfries had died. First responders reportedly had to use a rescue basket to lift her out of the tower because it was so narrow.

Notre Dame Cathedral Spire Collapses in Fire
Police in Paris say the cause of the massive fire enveloping the spire of Notre Dame Cathedral isn't yet known. It is believed the blaze began in scaffolding on the roof where renovation work was being carried out.

Although it is restricted, climbing the tower is a common trend among students who are set to graduate, reports said. "I don't think they went up there with the intent thinking that it would be possible to fall".

Monfries and a group of friends climbed the tower at roughly 3 a.m. "You have to ride the ram", Huang said of a statue of the university's mascot, which students climb on to take pictures.

While the entrances to the tower are supposed to be locked, thrill-seeking students often find a way inside, the Times reports.

Monfries was a senior and had been studying journalism, according to the Times.

"They're unlocked at night when they're cleaning", the student claimed.

"It's like a tradition, apparently, for seniors to sneak into the tower and climb up", student Antonia Greene said, CBS reported. The student, a senior, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, and the student's family was notified.
