Ecuador president says Assange used London embassy for 'spying'

The US has also requested his extradition, charging him with conspiracy to hack government computers.

The letters, which are virtually identical, read: "You have expressed concern that, should Julian Assange be extradited from the United Kingdom, there would be a risk that he could be subject to the death penalty".

In the Guardian interview, Moreno charged that Assange "mistreated our officials (and) started to make legal threats even against who was helping him".

"Julian Assange is somebody who has done a lot to shine a light on real abuses of state power and the war crimes that we saw in Iraq, so it's really key, I think, to ensure that we give the public the information so that we can hopefully ensure that politicians, at least in this country, don't ever take us into an illegal war again as we saw in Iraq in 2003", Williamson said.

During his time at the Ecuadorian embassy, reports emerged that Assange's hygiene had become an issue of annoyance for staff in the building, while Ecuador's president Lenin Moreno claimed he "repeatedly violated" the terms of his asylum via his online activities.

"Ecuador has made these allegations to justify the unlawful and extraordinary act of letting police come inside an embassy", Robinson told the UK's Sky News.

Letters signed by the foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, and his predecessor Boris Johnson, dated 7 March 2018 and 10 August 2018 respectively, confirm a person cannot be extradited if they could face the death penalty, according to British legislation.

She also criticised the Prime Minister for allegedly portraying himself as an embodiment of the country. He also picked on Pakistan , saying that India's cross-border strikes had exposed its "nuclear bluff".

Also Sunday, WikiLeaks said Australian Consul Clare West would visit the Ecuadoran embassy on Monday to request that the mission hand over Assange's belongings.

President Moreno has since accused Assange of trying to create a "centre for spying: at the embassy and using the facilities to "interfere in processes of other states".

Assange, 47, faces up to 12 months in prison after being found guilty of breaching his bail conditions when he entered the Ecuadorian embassy in 2012.

Although Swedish authorities abandoned their case against Assange in 2017, supporters of WikiLeaks have long feared his possible extradition could ultimately involve his relocation to the United States, where he remains wanted over his role in the leaking of classified military and diplomatic cables from 2010 onward.

Assange has denied the rape allegation, asserting the sex was consensual.

He has not formally responded to the USA conspiracy charge. In the meantime, he is expected to seek prison medical care for severe shoulder pain and dental problems, WikiLeaks has said.
