Chief: Boy thrown from Mall of America balcony being treated

'The child has been transported to the hospital and has been receiving care'.

"This is a horrific situation", he said. "The family and this child are in our thoughts and prayers".

Aranda has been banished from the mall in past years, though authorities said the trespassing holds had expired by Friday's incident.

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, of Minneapolis, was arrested at the mall's transit station after the attack and is jailed on a suspicion of attempted homicide charge.

Police say the boy was allegedly pushed or thrown by Aranda from a third-floor balcony at the mall.

Witnesses said the boy's mother was screaming for help.

"(Through) our investigative work and witnesses that we've spoken to, we feel confident saying that the suspect threw the child off of the third floor.

Records show that Aranda has a history of assault and bad behavior at the Mall of America, a sprawling complex in the Twin Cities suburb of Bloomington, Minnesota, that hosts hundreds of retail stores, restaurants, an amusement park and aquarium and draws 40 million visitors a year.

"We don't believe that there is a threat to the public at this point as the suspect has been located", he said, adding that the incident appeared to be isolated.

The boy was taken to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis with serious injuries.

Friends of the family began a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign for Landen, who is described as "the sweetest, kindest 5-year-old you will ever meet".

Hanneman said his wife and Landen's mother are long-time friends. "They give without expecting anything in return and are the type of family you always hope to live next door".

Bloomington Police reported that the victim was 5 years old.

'The child did suffer significant injuries, ' he said.

"He has many surgeries ahead in his life to try to get back to a normal life for a young, vibrant boy", Hanneman wrote.

Court records show the suspect was charged following two previous run-ins with police and security officers at the megamall. In one incident, he was accused of throwing things off the upper level of the mall. He tossed a glass of water in the woman's face, then threw a glass of tea at her leg, shattering the cup.

Aranda lives in the Bloomington area and has had a series of arrests and convictions related to the mall.

Mall of America officials said any more information about the incident will come from police.

At the news conference Saturday, Potts said his police department had an additional encounter with Aranda, in which he refused to pay his bill at a restaurant.

Potts said the department will focus on preparing its submission for formal charges at the Hennepin County Attorney's office and anticipates charges will be filed on Monday.
