American Airlines extends Boeing 737 MAX cancellations through August 19

Some aviation industry experts, however, claim Boeing might need a replacement for the 737 MAX series that consists of the MAX 8 and the MAX 9 to gain back people's trust.

American Airlines Group Inc said on Sunday it is extending Boeing Co 737 MAX cancellations through August 19, leading to about 115 daily canceled flights, or 1.5 percent of its daily summer flying schedule.

Southwest's decision will lead to 160 cancellations of some 4,200 daily flights between June 8 and August 5, while American's removal through August 19 means about 115 daily cancellations, or 1.5 percent of its summer flying schedule each day.

American Airlines had lowered one of its first quarter indicators in light of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes being grounded, along with the partial USA government shutdown and technical challenges.

On Thursday, Southwest airlines announced the decision to extend its cancellation of Boeing 737 Max aircraft through August 5.

Investigators are focusing on the plane's anti-stall software, the Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS).

A preliminary accident report into last month's fatal crash in Ethiopia found that faulty sensor readings and multiple automatic commands to push down the nose of the Boeing plane contributed to the crash, leaving the crew struggling to regain control.

Boeing is expected to submit a software update to the FAA in the next few weeks for review and possibly approval.

United Continental, the third US carrier with Max planes in its fleet, has not yet extended its Max-related cancellations.

"You can't hide the 737, you've got thousands of them of all types flying worldwide today for airlines", Henry Harteveldt, travel industry analyst and founder of Atmosphere Research Group, told Business Insider.

"But by extending our cancellations through the summer, we can. provide confidence to our customers and team members when it comes to their travel plans".

Overall the MAX represents just 5 percent of Southwest's total fleet and even less for American and United, but the strain on fleets increases as additional MAX deliveries remain frozen.

It is not the first time Trump has weighed in on the Ethiopian crash. 2,800 of those canceled flights have been caused from the 737 MAX being out of service.
