Winter Storm Called A 'Bomb Cyclone' Paralyzes Central US

Winter Storm Called A 'Bomb Cyclone' Paralyzes Central US

"Some of the devastating flooding associated with this storm is due to the fact that heavy rain is falling on areas where there is snow on the ground", said Kristina Dahl, senior climate scientist of the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). In Colorado, residents are dealing with blizzard conditions, Iowa and IL are facing severe flooding, while rivers are overtopping their banks in Nebraska and Missouri.

"Widespread and extremely unsafe flooding will continue today and tonight", the National Weather Service office in Omaha, Nebraska, said on Friday in a statement.

Heavy rain caused flooding in eastern parts of South Dakota and Nebraska, as well as in Iowa, where all or part of nine state parks were closed due to rising flood waters.

South Dakota's governor closed all state offices Thursday as the blizzard conditions moved in, while wind, blowing snow and snow-packed roadways made travel treacherous in western Nebraska. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis declared a state of emergency, and more than 74,000 customers in Colorado remained without electricity on Thursday afternoon.

Officials in eastern Nebraska said more than 2,600 people living along the Missouri, Platte and Elkhorn rivers there had been urged to evacuate, as waters breached levees in several rural spots.

The culprit was a sudden and severe drop in ground-level air pressure in Colorado, the most pronounced dive since 1950, Carbin said.

"We do know that here is a link between the warming Arctic and the weather patterns in the mid-latitudes", she said. A wind gust clocked in at 97 miles per hour (156 kph) in Colorado Springs.

An areal flood Warning for northern and parts of central Iowa has been extended through Saturday evening as "local creeks and streams, as well as the main river branches are running high", according to the weather service.

On Wednesday up to 1.2 meters of snow and 170-km-per-hour winds blasted Colorado, leaving thousands of motorists stranded and tens of thousands of people without power in Colorado and Texas.

The storm also contributed to the death of Daniel Groves, a Colorado State Patrol officer who was hit and killed by a auto as he helped another driver who had slid off Interstate 76 near Denver.

Most power outages were cleared by early Friday, according to the tracking site PowerOutage.

The Colorado National Guard announced it had rescued 93 people and two dogs after inspecting about 250 vehicles.

Meteorologists call storms like this one a "bomb cyclone", a winter hurricane that forms when the barometric pressure drops 24 millibars in 24 hours.

Tornado watches were issued in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. Air rushed into the low-pressure area and then rose into the atmosphere, causing severe weather. Tornadoes have so far been reported in New Mexico, Michigan and Kentucky, and have caused considerable damage to power lines and buildings, but no fatalities. Authorities said five people were hurt, but none of the injuries were life-threatening.
