S Sreesanth Compares Himself To Leander Paes After Supreme Court Verdict

S Sreesanth Compares Himself To Leander Paes After Supreme Court Verdict

India's Supreme Court on Friday set aside the life ban imposed on S Sreesanth by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

September 2013: Sreesanth is handed a life ban by the BCCI for his involvement in the spot-fixing case.

The country's apex court has asked the BCCI's disciplinary committee to decide the quantum of punishment for Seesanth within three months from today.

He, along with his Rajasthan Royals' teammates Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila was all found guilty by police for spot-fixing in a match in the same edition and spent time in Tihar Jail in Delhi. Khurshid argued that Sreesanth should have been penalised with a five-year ban at the most for not reporting the approach made by bookies, an offence under the BCCI's code of conduct.

The BCCI action followed the arrest of Sreesanth and the others by Delhi Police for alleged promises made to bookmakers during the 2013 IPL.

"I have heard about the Supreme Court order but we are yet to get the copy of the order".

October 17, 2017: The Kerala High Court restores the life ban on cricketer S Sreesanth in response to an appeal filed by the BCCI CEO Rahul Johri against the single-judge verdict which had revoked the ban earlier.

"The order dated 13.09.2013 of the disciplinary committee only to the extent of imposing sanction of lifetime ban is set aside".

The Supreme Court Bench, which also included Justice KM Joseph, had on 1 March reserved its order on the appeal against the Karala High Court order affirming the life ban imposed by the BCCI.

"This is a Supreme Court order and obviously a call needs to be taken".

On May 15, 2018, BCCI opposed the plea by Sreesanth seeking a relaxation of the ban to allow him to play in county cricket in England. "The punishment period has already been completed as I have been banned for nearly six years", said Sreesanth.

The former cricketer, who was arrested and later discharged by a trial court here in July 2015 in a criminal case related to the alleged spot-fixing, had claimed he had to confess his involvement in the alleged crime as police tortured him in custody and threatened to implicate his family in the case.
