Police questioning suspect in Gambino crime boss death

A 24-year-old man was arrested Saturday in the shooting death of the reputed boss of the Gambino crime family, New York City police said.

The NYPD has "an arrest warrant in hand from the Richmond County DA's office", Shea said during the news conference, adding that the suspect's arrest will happen upon coordination with prosecutors in New Jersey. "Were others conspiring to do this crime?"

Surveillance video of the killing showed a man, allegedly Comello, crash his auto into Cali's parked SUV, drawing Cali outside in what might have been a ploy to lure him out of the house, Shea said.

A panicked family member called 911, telling a dispatcher Cali was run over before he was shot, though investigators were still looking into whether the gunman mowed the mobster down, sources said.

The Colorado National Guard announced it had rescued 93 people and two dogs after inspecting about 250 vehicles. Air rushed into the low-pressure area and then rose into the atmosphere, causing severe weather.

The 53-year-old Cali, who was shot to death on Wednesday outside his Staten Island home, was allegedly the head of the Gambino family, one of the five Italian-American Mafia families that have historically dominated organized crime in NY and New Jersey. Police were searching for the pickup truck that raced from the grisly scene, sources said.

When asked about the suspect's arrest record, Shea said he "crossed paths in some limited circumstances with the NYPD", including getting a parking ticket on Staten Island the day Cali was killed.

Experts say Cali, a native of the Italian island Sicily, rose quickly in the Gambino family - serving in the organization's ruling panel for years before replacing Domenico Cefalu in 2015. Cali was convicted in an extortion scheme in the late 2000s and served 16 months in federal prison.

The last crime family boss to be shot in New York City was Paul Castellano.
