North Korea Accuses ‘Gangster-Like’ John Bolton of Sabotaging Denuclearization Talks

"As a result, the summit ended with no significant result", said the North Korean diplomat, who was present in Vietnam. "(We) can't assess the current situation only with Vice Foreign Minister Choe's remarks", Cheong Wa Dae said. She says the "gangster-like stand of the US will eventually put the situation in danger".

Choe questioned the claim by Trump at a news conference after the talks in Hanoi broke down that the North was seeking the lifting of all sanctions against it, and said it was seeking only the ones that are directed at its civilian economy.

North Korea threatened on Friday to suspend negotiations with the USA and resume nuclear and missile testing, BBC News reported.

In Washington this week, USA special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, said the United States expected to be able to continue its close engagement, though he offered no specifics on when new talks might be held.

"We should not concede to North Korea's threats", he stressed.

Bolton also disputed Choe's characterization that he and Pompeo had created a "hostile atmosphere" as "inaccurate", and said he had discussed the reports from North Korea with his South Korean counterparts this morning. "Just in the past hour, I spoke with my South Korean counterpart and we've discussed their reaction and our reaction, but I would like to speak further within USA government before we respond". Talks between Mr Trump and Kim - the second time the two leaders have met - collapsed as a result the latter's demands over global sanctions imposed in response to nuclear weapons programme, which it pursued for years in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump meet along with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, White House national security adviser John Bolton, right, during the second North Korea-U.S. summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, Feb. 28, 2019.

Russian Federation and China, which border North Korea, have the relatively closest diplomatic relations with the extremely insular North Korean state.

"On our way back to the homeland, our chairman of the state affairs commission said, 'For what reason do we have to make this train trip again?'" she said, referring to Kim. "I have every expectation we will be able to continue to do that".

Pompeo said the USA expects Kim to live up to his promise to Trump to maintain the moratorium on missile launches and nuclear tests. He said he had spoken to his South Korean counterpart but wanted to consult with other US officials before responding further.

Kim is expected to make his decision on the matter "in a short period of time", she said.

The tone of the North Korean Foreign Ministry, highlighting the lack of progress in the implementation of the denuclearization issue, is in stark contrast to the far more optimistic rhetoric from the United States special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun.

Markey added that "should North Korea decide to abandon diplomacy or conduct new provocations, the United States must be ready to apply additional pressure on the Kim regime".

Kim would soon make an official statement on the actions his country would take, Choe told reporters and foreign diplomats in Pyongyang.

He said: "Diplomacy is still very much alive". Earlier this month, Bolton said that if North Korea doesn't shutter its nuclear program and everything associated with it, "they're not going to get relief from the crushing economic sanctions that have been imposed on them and we'll look at ramping those sanctions in fact".
