New investment at Toyota WV is $111 million, 123 anticipated jobs

U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks also congratulated Toyota on its expansion in his hometown.

Japanese automaker Toyota on Thursday said it would invest $13 billion in its USA operations by the year 2021, boosting its previous pledge for investments totaling $10 billion over the same period.

"Since Toyota first came to Alabama 17 years ago to build engines, it has grown from a few hundred team members to nearly 2,000 Alabamians at the engine plant".

Toyota's latest announcement is an add-on to a plan first announced in 2017. The jobs are not coming to the WSAZ region, but the company is investing $238 million in the Georgetown plant.

$111 million for equipment and expansion of a plant in Buffalo, W. Va., to double the capacity of hybrid transaxles.

The company got millions in state tax incentives when it upgraded the plant for the new process.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky Inc. executives, local officials, and Gov. Matt Bevin got together for the announcement.

The funding will lead to greater production of hybrid versions of the RAV4 and Lexus ES, with the production of the latter beginning in May at Toyota's Kentucky manufacturing plant.

"TMMK's 8,000 team members also build Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid and Lexus ES models with an annual capacity of 550,000 vehicles", a company spokesperson said.

Toyota now manufactures the Camry, Avalon, Lexus ES 350, Camry hybrid and Avalon hybrid at the Georgetown facility.

Toyota's total West Virginia investment represents $1.4 billion and 1,600 jobs, according to Manchin's office. The plant has the capacity of 12,000 units.

"Today's announcement further cements the strong community partnership Toyota has in our state". "The production changes announced today are centered upon our commitment to meet changing customer desires by diversifying the types of products our team members build here in Georgetown".

RAV4 Hybrid production will start in January 2020 with an average capacity of 100,000 units.
