Hen party heartbreak as missing Ruth's body recovered from lough

She was last seen on CCTV walking towards an area of water at Carlingford Lough after leaving Taaffe's bar in the town at around 11.30pm.

The group, the majority of whom were from Belfast, began searching for her straight away but could not find her.

Newcastle mother of three, Ruth Maguire went missing while out with friends in Carlingford on March 16, 2019.

Ruth Maguire, 30, was one of 32 women on the hen do, but when the women returned to the house in which they were staying after the pub closed they realised she was not with them.

A multi-agency search and rescue operation by Gardaí, the Belfast Coastguard, the Bangor Coastguard, the Rescue 116 helicopter and Mourne Mountain Rescue was called off on Carlingford Lough after darkness fell on Sunday evening.

A woman's body has been discovered during a police search for missing Co Down nurse Ruth Maguire.

Gardai are treating it as a tragic event and a post-mortem examination is due to take place later.

The South Eastern heath trust has offered condolences to the family of Ruth Maguire, whose body was recovered from the water in Co Louth yesterday.

George Campbell of the Greenore Coastguard, said: "I am sorry to say that a young female has been recovered and identified as the person who was reported missing".

"Our sympathy goes out to the lady's family".

"Gardaí wish to thank the public for their help in this instance, the help of the volunteers and the Coast Guard".

"Everybody is very shocked here this morning", Kay McKevitt said yesterday.

"They are not in the village long enough to get their bearings".
