Google releases first Android Q beta for Pixel phones

Google releases first Android Q beta for Pixel phones

In keeping with its pattern of a March release for the last several years, Google has as of this afternoon launched the first developer preview of the next major version of Android - giving developers and early adopters a look at what's coming via a beta that's being made available for even more devices this time around. There were some tricks developers could use to continue to update their UI while they were not the active app, but an unsupported app would eventually show a stale UI without special developer tweaks. "Building on top of efforts like Google Play Protect and runtime permissions, Android Q brings a number of additional privacy and security features for users", as well as a host of others that are likewise included in the update. That said, the first beta has some new stuff baked in already, such as a new permission management system for location - you now have three options, granting an app access all the time, only while it's in use, or never. Users will have more control over app access to location info, shared files and repositories like Photos and Videos.

Information about Android Q is scant at the moment, but the new mobile operating system will introduce new privacy features, support for foldable handsets, and more, Google says.

Google doesn't mention it in its official blog post, but Android Police spotted for some theming options in Android Q's developer settings. It also assists developers to opt for priority notification.

Android Q also makes sharing content faster. This will allow users to navigate from one app to the other in a jiffy. New restrictions have been implemented on what activities can be launched in the background without user interaction, too. Key settings such as NFC, volume, Internet connectivity will be displayed in the floating UI. For example, Google Chrome's display panel might have connectivity settings like Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi and data. The same should hold true for Android Q so those who are interested in the program will want to keep an eye out for it over the coming days or weeks. With support for Android Foldables form factor, the platform will include changes such as onResume and onPause to assist multi-resume and more. Dynamic Depth will be an open format, so it might take off. This data can also be used to create 3D images or support AR photography use cases.

Google expects to offer six Android Q beta releases followed by a final release in Q3 2019. Google is making it easier for apps to use depth data by allowing apps to request a JPEG + Dynamic Depth image, allowing them to offer different kinds of blur effects. Till Kottmann overnight reported on Twitter that he had spotted that Android Beta's "how to provide feedback" page is accessible - also suggesting that the arrival of Android Q Beta is imminent.

This is all for now, folks.
