Former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke Headed to Iowa this Weekend

Aware that the 2020 Democratic primary is quickly taking shape, O'Rourke is set to announce his candidacy this week, rather than launching an exploratory committee.

A Des Moines Register/CNN Iowa poll released this weekend found that O'Rourke has dropped six percentage points from the first Iowa poll that was released in December.

O'Rourke's video for Giddens focuses on getting out the vote among students at the University of Northern Iowa. Speculation grew that he would run for president after he was narrowly defeated by Sen. The former Texas congressman is expected to visit the Hawkeye State on Saturday to participate in a get-out-the-vote event.

While in Iowa this weekend, O'Rourke is scheduled to speak on a conference call this weekend with the High School Democrats of America.

During a two-hour screening of a documentary titled "Running with Beto" that chronicles O'Rourke's failed U.S. Senate bid, his camp sent an email to supporters inviting them to be the "first to hear Beto's big announcement".

"Supporting (Giddens) for state Senate is the way that we get Iowa, and by extension this country, back on the right track", O'Rourke says in the video, released on Monday evening. Other presidential hopefuls who can not make it to Iowa this weekend, including Sens.

Paul Tewes, who was Barack Obama's 2008 Iowa state director, has also been advising O'Rourke, a source familiar with his role said. Sterzenbach and multiple advisers close to O'Rourke did not respond to requests for comment. Sterzenbach, who until recently was a contractor advising the Iowa Democratic Party on the caucuses, has reportedly joined O'Rourke's team and will advise the Texas Democrat in the early nominating state, according to Politico.

The developments underscore how quickly O'Rourke - a little-known congressman before he raised $80 million in his Senate run against Cruz - is assembling a national team, something other candidates spent much of past year preparing to do.

Late last month, O'Rourke said he had reached his decision about whether he would be jumping into the crowded 2020 Democratic presidential primary. "We are excited to share it with everyone soon".

His unorthodox and ultimately unsuccessful Senate campaign, which shunned traditional strategists and instead relied on the candidate's organic appeal, broke fundraising records and earned O'Rourke a national profile that catapulted him into the presidential discussion.

"There are so many candidacies, so many leaders, who we got to be a part of this incredible thing in Texas over the last two years, and it continues, and we are so excited", he said.
