Ethiopian Airlines 'believes in Boeing'

Ethiopian Airlines 'believes in Boeing'

United Airlines, which has 14 Max aircraft, does not have any flights scheduled on the equipment through April 9.

Ethiopian Airlines is widely seen as Africa's best-managed airline.

A preliminary report into the Lion Air crash has suggested the combination of incorrect sensor readings and MCAS contributed to the plane diving into the sea.

Air Force General (Ret.) Darren McDew, former head of the U.S. Transportation Command, and Captain Lee Moak, former President of the Air Line Pilots Association, will serve as the interim co-chairs of the panel, pending the appointment of other members.

The second, in Ethiopia two weeks ago, prompted regulators across the world to ground the MAX, a more fuel-efficient version of Boeing's successful 737 franchise that first flew in 2016.

The boss of Ethiopian Airlines said he still "believes in Boeing" in spite of a crash involving the U.S. firm's 737 Max plane which killed 157 people.

The debate over the 737 MAX safety features has touched on cockpit instrumentation as well: Last week, The New York Times reported that the angle-of-attack indicator and the disagree light were optional features that operators had to pay extra for.

The worldwide grounding of the Max fleet will eat into Boeing's cash flow because aircraft manufacturers get most of the purchase price only when the plane is delivered - Boeing has suspended Max deliveries.

Boeing said it invited more than 200 global airline pilots, technical leaders and regulators for an information session on Wednesday.

A section of Kenyans have reacted angrily to plan by flag carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) to purchase 10 Boeing 737-800 Max jets even as other airlines cancelled similar deals with Boeing.

Southwest, which has 34 Max aircraft, is making cancellations five days in advance, with an average of 130 daily cancellations.

But even as KQ set in motion plan to buy the now grounded Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, its counterpart in Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, which had also entered into a similar contract with Boeing went on the opposition direction. Boeing has about 4,600 unfilled orders for the plane's various configurations.

One source familiar with the tests said the FAA is expected to receive the software early in the week. For instance, the airplane's flight manuals and the pilot training protocols will also have to be updated.

The training and software fixes are part of a full-court press by Boeing to restore confidence in its 737 MAX 8 jets.

It could be months before some airlines will fly the 737 MAX 8: Air Canada announced last week it would remove all 24 MAX aircraft from its flight schedules through at least July 1.

Singapore Airlines said its offshoot, SilkAir, which operates the 737 MAX, had received an invitation to the meeting and would send representatives.
