Combatting Vaccine Misinformation (By Monika Bickert, VP, Global Policy Management)

Combatting Vaccine Misinformation (By Monika Bickert, VP, Global Policy Management)

Facebook's biggest move this week was the announcement that the platform will attempt to build back the sense of privacy that was eroded by the house policy to harvest as much data as possible. "For example, if a group or Page admin posts this vaccine misinformation, we will exclude the entire group or Page from recommendations, reduce these groups and Pages' distribution in News Feed and Search, and reject ads with this misinformation".

Pointing out that the algorithms are not created to recognize quality information from falsities, Schiff expressed his concern over posts, messages, and advertising containing vaccine misinformation being spread over Facebook and Instagram, among other websites.

"For ad accounts that continue to violate our policies, we may take further action, such as disabling the ad account", Bickert said.

It's also notable that Facebook is now embroiled in a public relations nightmare, with mounting criticism about its privacy protection for users as well as a perceived lack of action against alleged hate groups and Russian propaganda campaigns.

Bickert says the site also won't show or recommend content that contains misinformation about vaccinations on Instagram Explore or hashtag pages.

A month ago, the U.S. Representative Adam Schiff, D-Calif. a letter to Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg and addressed Facebook's shortcomings in counteracting the dispersal of inaccurate facts.

Other platforms have also taken action on the subject - YouTube has removed adverts from anti-vaccination videos and Pinterest has taken action to block vaccination searches.

They won the Premier League with a record 100 points last season and are in contention for an unprecedented quadruple this year. The opponent comes here - against Liverpool they tried to press but here they have 11 players in the box.

Facebook has announced that they're stepping up their efforts in fighting vaccine misinformation across their platform.

Facebook will also share education information about vaccines to people who have uncovered misinformation.

The crack down probably won't sit well among free speech advocates.

However, the crack down isn't a complete ban on the controversial content.

The company has come under fire for the slew of anti-vax groups and pages on the website spreading myths, such as vaccines causing autism and conspiracy theories about mandatory vaccinations.

The anti-vaxxer movement is gaining momentum at an alarming pace. The company is also working on providing "additional context" related to vaccines when users decide to search, visit pages, or join groups related to vaccines. We will have an update on this soon.
