Christchurch mosque attacks: Bangladesh Test cricket team escape mass shooting

Members of the Bangladesh cricket team have described how they had to run for safety after witnessing horrors "straight out of a movie scene" during the Christchurch terror attacks yesterday. Team manager Khaled Mashud told espncricinfo.com the players had a lucky escape. At a news conference, Police Commissioner Mike Bush advised "anyone that was thinking of going to a mosque anywhere in New Zealand today not to go, to close your doors until you hear from us again".

Bangladesh s cricket team escaped unscathed after a shooting at a mosque in central Christchurch, an official told AFP on Friday.

Six people have been reported dead, New Zealand local media reported and they also reported of a second shooting at another mosque in Christchurch itself.

Just as we were approaching the mosque, we realised we were right next to where the shooting actually happened. "I just hope after returning home we can overcome it (trauma) with the passing of time", Tamim said before the team left Christchurch.

"If we were there three to four minutes earlier, we would have been in the mosque, massive thing might have happened". This could then have been a massive incident.

"We were very close, we could see the mosque".

"We were in the bus about eight to 10 minutes. We could see people running out and saying that there is firing going on", Shrinivas, a Mumbai-based software engineer, added. Speaking about the same, ESPN's Bangladesh correspondent Mohammad Isam said,"They were just outside the mosque about to get off from the bus and go into the mosque when they heard shooting and a lot of people running out and they saw someone wounded in front of them".

He said arrangements were being made to fly the team back to Bangladesh as soon as possible.

They were due to play New Zealand in the third Test of their series but that match, due to start on Saturday at Canterbury's Hagley Oval, has been cancelled.

All 14 players who'd come to the Oval for the Test-eve practice session, plus the three from the support staff boarded the team bus shortly after 1.30 pm, which was their scheduled time for prayers.

Police had one person in custody but they were not sure if others were involved, and people should stay away from mosques.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of those affected by the shocking situation in Christchurch". What's confirmed is that many drenched in blood were seen on Deans Avenue, trying to escape the mayhem.

Visitors head home after almost getting caught up in the terror attack that left 49 people dead, as questions rise whether New Zealand is safe from acts of extreme violence or terrorist attacks. Bangladeshi cricketers also tweeted about the incident.
