All US diplomats have left Venezuela: Mike Pompeo

USA diplomats began the exodus from the Caracas, Venezuela, embassy earlier this week.

Maduro repeated his claim that the blackout, which lasted nearly a week, was due to "successive attacks" against the country's major hydroelectric facility at Guri in Bolivar state, "directed" by U.S. President Donald Trump's National Security Advisor John Bolton.

The United States has withdrawn all remaining diplomatic personnel from its embassy in Caracas as the crisis in Venezuela deepens. "I know it is a hard moment for them", US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Thursday. "They are fully dedicated to our mission of supporting the Venezuelan people's aspirations to live in a democracy and build a better future for their families".

Supporters of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro marched through capital of Caracas on Saturday afternoon to demonstrate their support for the country's embattled leader.

Pompeo said the diplomats assigned to Venezuela will continue their work "from other locations" where they will continue to work on getting humanitarian assistance to the Venezuelan people "and support the democratic actors bravely resisting tyranny".

Pompeo released a video statement directly to the Venezuelan people on Thursday to reassure them of US support in the wake of the withdrawal. According to the Treasury, the extension would enable CITGO to continue its activities while "prohibiting any benefit from flowing back to the illegitimate Maduro regime".

It is unclear when American staff might return to the country, now mired in political and economic chaos.

Protests are also planned in the capital of Caracas and other parts of Venezuela as US -backed Guaido seeks to ramp up pressure on Maduro, who says he is the target of a coup plot directed from Washington.

"Since this Monday. we have revoked 340 visas, 107 of which include visas of Maduro's former diplomats and their families", Palladino told reporters. The U.S. flag outside the embassy had been taken down.
