Turkey building collapse death toll hits 14

Turkish officials blamed illegal construction practices for the collapse of an apartment building in Istanbul as they joined hundreds of mourners Saturday at a funeral for nine members of one family killed in the disaster.

"The number of those who lost their lives has climbed to 15", Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said, quoted by Hurriyet newspaper and DHA news agency.

Turkey's president has visited the scene of an apartment building collapse in Istanbul as the death toll increased to 17.

He said the government would take "determined" steps after investigators complete their work and called for speedy urban renewal. Suleyman Soylu said early Saturday that another body had been found in the rubble.

The cause of the tragedy is under investigation but officials have said the top three floors of the eight-story building were built illegally.

Erdogan is also visiting a hospital where more than a dozen people are being treated.

Qualcomm this week unveiled its next-gen premium mobile processor, the Snapdragon 855 , which will power next year's flagship. Qualcomm states that them using ultrasound in the 3D Sonic Sensor is more secure and accurate than the alternative.

The collapse fanned criticism of a government amnesty granted previous year to people accused of an illegal building - a measure announced ahead of municipal elections this March.

Turkish cities have grown massively under Erdogan's 15 years in power.

Friends and relatives waited near the wreckage for news of their missing loved ones as emergency teams, aided by sniffer dogs, worked around the clock to reach possible survivors.

Fourteen out of 35 people were rescued from the debris, he added.

"We estimate that there were 35 people trapped under the rubble and we have now accounted for 35", he said while stressing that search operations would continue as before.
