Spotify Warns Free Users with Ad Blockers Will Be Banned

Spotify has often punished rule breakers by sending warning emails and temporarily suspending the offender until they remove their ad blocker or purchased Premium to continue using the service.

An account termination is much more likely, and swift, if Spotify discovers you are the one creating and distributing software that blocks the ads. You do have to wonder if this will have the desired effect for Spotify, or simply make those individuals determined not to block adverts work harder to find techniques that can't be mitigated against.

Thailand election: Thai princess to stand as PM candidate
Princess Ubolratana Mahidol, 67, has been nominated as a candidate for a party allied to divisive former PM Thaksin Shinawatra. Soon after Friday's announcement, her catchphrase #SongPhraSlender (Long Live Slender) was number one on Twitter in Thailand.

Spotify released yesterday its financial results for 2018 and along with that updated its Terms and Conditions.

"Spotify respects intellectual property rights and expects you to do the same", it said. The suspension would be revoked if they removed their ad blocker or upgraded to a Premium account, and in some cases where the problem persisted, Spotify would terminate the account for good. Starting March 1st, if you are caught using an ad blocker, you could be suspended or banned immediately. The music service also reportedly estimated that 2 million users are using an ad-blocker or a modified app to avoid ads, which is about 2 percent of its ad-supported monthly users. We've reached out to Spotify for comment and will update this post if we hear back. This is extremely important for streaming services who offer free music or free TV shows that use ads to cover the costs. But profitability has been extremely hard, so much so that it just posted the first profitable quarter in the streaming service's twelve-year history.
