Quebec City mosque shooter Alexandre Bissonnette to learn sentence today

The attack at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre in the quiet Sainte-Foy neighbourhood of Canada's oldest city, he concluded, will go down in Canadian history "written in blood" as one of this country's worst tragedies.

Bissonnette, 29, pleaded guilty last March to six counts of first-degree murder and six of attempted murder after he walked into the mosque at the Islamic Cultural Centre during evening prayers on January 29, 2017 and opened fire.

While first-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence, Huot said he had to decide how long Bissonnette would have to wait before he could ask for parole.

But Huot said Bissonnette had previously considered attacking other targets including feminists, shopping centres and airports.

He walked into the mosque at the Islamic Cultural Centre during evening prayers on January 29, 2017 and opened fire.

The Crown had recommended that his six life sentences be served consecutively, which would have totalled 150 years.

While Huot said the attack was motivated by prejudice, he said it did not constitute a terror attack.

"The US Supreme Court would not find a 150-year [term] cruel and unusual punishment", Huot said earlier in the day, but added "punishment should not be vengeance". In the case of McArthur, who killed eight men from Toronto's gay village, the Crown had sought a sentence of 50 years without parole eligibility; the judge ruled he can apply for parole after 25 years, when he is 91 years old.

Outside the courtroom, Aymen Derbali, who was left quadriplegic in the shooting, said he was "very upset and astonished" that Bissonnette did not get more time.

The judge read out segments of his 246-page decision as a packed courtroom sat for six hours.

The small Argentine town of Progreso, where the footballer lived for most of his childhood, was also in mourning. Sala's family said that it was with "infinite sadness" that they had identified his body.

The longest sentence to date in Canada is 75 years without parole.

Bissonnette's parents and members of Quebec City's Muslim community were present for the sentencing.

Bissonnette also told a psychiatrist that he regretted not killing more people.

Bissonnette had a history of mental health issues and a fascination with mass murders.

Six people were killed and 19 others were injured.

Bissonnette's defence team had questioned the severity of such a sentence during the trial, saying it amounts to a death sentence.

Alexandre Bissonnette, 29, pleaded guilty last March to six counts of first-degree murder and six of attempted murder. "I am not a terrorist, I am not an Islamophobe".

But in a police interrogation played in court during sentencing, Bissonnette told investigators he wanted to protect his family from terrorists when he committed the killings.

One of the man's victim who was paralyzed in the attack, Aymen Derbali, said that numerous survivors were not pleased with the judge's sentencing.
