Oscars 2019: With Green Book, Mahershala Ali Bags His Second Academy Trophy

Despite the laundry list of prestigious awards the feel-good movie has received this awards season, many people have panned it, including critics, director Spike Lee and most notably, Shirley's own family. Ali previously won an Oscar for his supporting role in "Moonlight" in 2017. Green Book ended up winning the biggest honor of the night as "Best Film" of the year, while one of its actors, Mahershala Ali, made some history.

The Academy's decision to have U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) (shown above) introduce "Green Book" is creating nearly as much controversy as the film itself. Washington won best actor for "Training Day" (2001) and supporting actor for "Glory" (1989) more than a decade apart.

Viewers had a mixed reaction to the surprise Best Picture win at the Oscars.

"I know I wouldn't be here without her", he said onstage after receiving his statuette. "All in the name of wins and productivity". "Wow. wow. I got it!" "Don Shirley, obviously we all thanked Mahershala, gave him a great thank you". He later won an honorary Oscar in 2001.

Domee Shi won for her adorably odd short animated film "Bao" and Rayka Zehtabchi for her short documentary "Period". "They were together a year and a half, and they did remain friends".

"I can't believe they have John Lewis introducing Green Book", filmmaker Nia DaCosta tweeted.

Mata wrote in his personal blog : "Everything possible seemed to happen to us". "There's fewer questions marks about them after that today for me".

The Oscar for best feature documentary went to "Free Solo", directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's nerve-wracking account of Alex Honnold's ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

It truly caps off a odd journey in this year's Oscars.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", a film whose cleverness and brio startled audiences expecting just another franchise extension, won the award for best feature animation, beating out the usual Pixar contender "Incredibles 2".

The family of Don Shirley, who is played by Mahershala Ali in the film, has also said the portrayal is not accurate.

Lee, reportedly compared the "Green Book" win to a referee making "the wrong call".
