NYPD Detective Shot, Killed During Robbery Call

NYPD Detective Shot, Killed During Robbery Call

"Sources said the detective - who had just a year to go before retirement - was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital, and the sergeant is expected to survive", NY1 reported.

The shooting started about two minutes after the officers were directed to go to the store, according to dramatic dispatch audio.

Both officers had opened fire when they saw a suspect advancing toward them and pointing what appeared to be a handgun at them. This is when Simonsen and Goreman were shot.

Tuesday night the NYPD confirmed that a police detective was shot and killed and another officer was wounded while responding to an armed robbery in Queens, according to numerous reports.

"Tonight highlights the incredibly courageous actions NYPD members perform each day in the name of fighting crime and keeping people safe in every neighborhood".

An imitation gun belonging to the suspect was recovered on the scene. The officer was killed in what appears to be "an absolute tragic case of friendly fire", NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said in a press conference late Tuesday.

The suspect, a 27-year-old male, was shot multiple times and taken to the New York Hospital Queens.

"It was heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbreaking", De Blasio said.

'Make no mistake about it, friendly fire aside, it is because of the actions of the suspect that Detective Simonsen is dead, ' the commissioner said as he choked back tears.

The attack happened in Iran's port city of Chabahar which has been emerging as economic hub between the regional countries. Iranian border guards have repeatedly come under attacks by terror outfits active on the Pakistani soil.

"Since 1981, some 26 police officers across the United States have been shot and killed by fellow police officers who have mistaken them for unsafe criminals", the report said.

The detectives were responding to a call about a robbery at a cellphone store in Queens, the police said.

De Blasio said Wednesday all flags in the city would be lowered to half-staff to honor the slain officer. He was transported to the hospital by a good Samaritan, O'Neill said, and is listed in stable condition.

He was also an elected delegate for the 102nd Precinct squad.

Down the block from the 102, the Daily News front-page photo of Simonsen has been taped to the window of the grocery store where the detective was a regular customer.

"We miss him, we're going to miss him. All-time, all the time, he come in my store, all times", one worker said. "That bravery and resolve is something we all need to understand".

Simonsen should've been off Tuesday for a union meeting, but he opted to go to work so he could continue tracking a string of recent robberies, Detectives' Endowment Association president Michael Palladino said.

"I thought, 'Who plays with firecrackers in the rain?'" he said. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, I offer my deepest sympathies to Detective Simonsen's loved ones and fellow members of the NYPD".

Officers responded and fired multiple rounds, during which Simonsen was hit, the commissioner informed.
