Measles outbreak sparks concern over anti-vaccination movement

As alarming as some of the recent numbers are, it pales in comparison to what measles used to be in the United States.

News stories have been tracking the recent measles outbreak in Washington state that now stands at 38 cases with two of those patients hospitalized.

Clark County also reported three new exposure sites, all of which are medical facilities in Vancouver - the Vancouver Clinic Salmon Creek, the Sea Mar Medical Clinic Salmon Creek and the Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center Emergency Department. The outbreak includes 42 cases among those who were not immunized, six cases where immunization has not been verified and one case where the person had received a single dose of vaccine.

Five new cases of measles have been diagnosed in the Houston area, part of a national trend that's seeing a return of the once-eradicated disease. Israel and Ukraine are now dealing with large outbreaks of measles.

Kids can also start getting the flu vaccine at 6 months of age. As a highly contagious infection, measles can live in an airspace where an infected person was for up to two hours.

A hallmark of measles is a rash that begins as flat, red spots on the face and spreads down the neck to the rest of the body.

Measles is an airborne virus that lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person and can be spread through coughing and sneezing. The lowest was in 2012 with 55 cases, the highest occurred in 2014 with 667 cases.

According to Montgomery County officials, a 2-year-old girl is recovering from the disease.
