In return, they will receive Mavericks guard Dennis Smith Jr.

Porzingis, who will be a restricted free agent this summer, is now sidelined following ACL surgery and could be out for the remainder of the season.

Porzingis taking a qualifying offer next year in order to become an unrestricted free agent after that would be risky. The teams also announced the Mavs have sent two first-round picks to the Knicks as part of the trade.

The Knicks did call New Orleans about Anthony Davis, but the Pelicans weren't interested in Porzingis.

News broke earlier Thursday that the 23-year-old met with Knicks management to discuss the direction the franchise was headed.

He recently worked out with a coach on the court for roughly 45 minutes.

Porzingis voiced his frustration with the team's losing ways and expressed his concern that a culture is developing that will make sustained organizational success unlikely, ESPN reported.

His uncertain standing with the Knicks has been the focus of multiple teams around the league, who've wondered if there would be pathway to acquire him, front office sources told ESPN.

Smith returned to the Mavericks lineup on January 23 after a two-week absence while trade rumors swirled.

Smith, the No. 9 selection in the 2017 NBA Draft, is averaging 12.9 points, 4.3 assists and 1.3 steals through 32 games this season.
