Kate Middleton Stuns In One-Shoulder White Gown At BAFTA Awards

Kate wore a show-stopping white one shoulder gown by Alexander McQueen with Jimmy Choo glittery pumps and Princess Diana's diamond and south sea pearl earrings.

"I thought that the earrings looked stunning, it was a very fairy tale princess look", British jeweler and pearl specialist Claudia Bradby tells PEOPLE, adding: "The dress gave the earrings space to be lovely on their own and it was all very feminine". In June 1997, Diana wore the earrings without the drop to a performance of Swan Lake at Royal Albert Hall, one of her last public appearances before her death in August.

Like numerous jewels Kate has inherited from her mother-in-law, she chose to modernize the original design, swapping the pearls worn by Diana (with different diamond detailing) for a smaller more contemporary pearl.

She completed the gorgeous look with her hair pulled back into a low bun, metallic silver shoes and a pair of diamond earrings, once owned by Princess Diana, per the Hollywood Reporter.

The Duke of Cambridge has been the president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts since 2010, when he took over from Sir David Attenborough. Prince William joined Kate looking dapper in a traditional tuxedo.
